all about La Tomatina...
La Tomatina is a very popular festival celebrated in Spain, thousands from all over the world celebrate it. It takes place on the last Wednesday of august in Bunol, a very close town to Valencia.
There is a lot to do, it is a week long celebration with dancing, parades, music and fireworks and obviously the main event… the food fight!
The food fight starts at about 11 am, (but arrive with plenty of time to spare) the event hasn’t technically started until some brave person climbs to the top of a greasy, slippery two stories high wooden pole (Palojabón) and grabs the ham from the top, they do this because tomatoes are normally eaten with ham (whoever gets the ham gets to keep it!). Water will be fired from cannons and the excitement begins. Truckloads of tomatoes are thrown on to the streets of the city centre on Bunol. At the end of exactly one hour the event finishes with cannons fire water again and the tomatoes are swept and cleaned up.
